$100 Food Budget – Day 21

So what happens if you’re on a $100 food budget for a month and you find yourself wanting something to snack on? Well one option is looking in the cupboard and finding some old chips. Actually, the Sun Chips weren’t that bad considering how old they were. I don’t remember when I bought them exactly, but I’m pretty sure it was sometime in 2009.

I also have some expired packets of hot cocoa mix which taste perfectly fine. But don’t worry, I’m not going to drink any expired milk. :P

I didn’t buy any food today.

$100 Food Budget – Day 20

I hadn’t intended to buy any food today. But then I thought I could make a quick stop and buy some buns. Sliced bread is great, but buns work better for certain things. (Such as burgers.) I ended up grabbing a few other things too. I bought:

  • Buns
  • Chicken nuggets
  • Sandwich meat
  • 2-liter of Cranberry Sierra Mist (Mmmmm!)

My total came to $7.01. As I heard my total, I immediately wished I had chosen to carry an extra penny. Unfortunately, all I had were dollar coins, so the store got eight of them.

Total Spent: $81.01

Remaining Cash: $18.99

Can I stretch that $18.99 and make it last the rest of the month? I think I can. I might have to eat some weird stuff toward the end, but I’ll make it!

You know what I haven’t had in a while? Pancakes. I’m sorta in the mood to eat pancakes right now but I don’t have the fixin’s to make ‘em. Perhaps I’ll go to the store tomorrow and buy pancake stuff.

My sister gave me a whole bunch of leftover pot roast yesterday. I ate some of that today. I do enjoy a good pot roast, which is one of three reasons I could never be a vegetarian. The other two reasons are turkey and chicken. 

I didn’t buy any food day.

$100 Food Budget – Day 18

Well, I didn’t intend to spend any money on food today but sometimes things turn out differently than planned. I was heading home when I remembered that I was low on milk. So I stopped to get milk and ended up getting a few other things too.

It’s funny how before I went on this budget I had trouble using all my milk or bread. Now they are the two things I run out of most quickly. Today I bought:

  • Milk
  • Cheese
  • 2-liter bottle of Squirt
  • 20 ounce bottle of Coke

My girlfriend sent me a coupon for a free 20 ounce soda, so my bottle of Coke was free!

Remaining Cash: $26.00

Woohoo! This is the first time my remaining cash has been an exact dollar amount. I guess the big question now is, “can I make $26.00 last the rest of the month?” I believe that I can.

$100 Food Budget – Day 17

I’ve had half a box of chicken burgers sitting in my freezer for a couple of months. I had thought about eating a couple of them numerous times over the last few weeks but never did. Well today I ate a couple of them and they were quite tasty. I didn’t have any buns, so I used some toast instead.

I really enjoy chicken burgers, but I sort of hate that they shrink wrap them in sets of four. I would never eat four at once, and separating four frozen burgers from each other is a pain. They say on the box that you shouldn’t thaw them first, and I don’t, but prying them apart with a butter knife is a tedious endeavor. So yeah, I wish they would just individually wrap them.

I didn’t buy any food today. However, I noticed when I counted the money in my tin, it was twenty-five cents short. I use the receipts to calculate my totals and I don’t think I got the math wrong. So that leads me to believe I misplaced a quarter somewhere along the way.

$100 Food Budget – Day 16

I was finishing up at work today when I remembered that I didn’t have any bread. Bread is one thing I really miss when I don’t have it so I decided I had better stop off and get some. I also decided to stop at Aldi and see if they still sell mandarin oranges. It turns out they do and they only cost 49 cents per can!

I then went to Piggly Wiggly and bought a loaf of Sara Lee Honey Wheat bread. It was on sale for $1.99, which is the same price Walmart has been selling it for. I felt pretty good about that deal. The complete list of my purchases are:

  • 12 cans of mandarin oranges
  • Bread
  • Blueberry bagels
  • Generic Toaster Pastries (Cherry)

You can save quite a bit of money buying generic stuff. Food Club brand toaster pastries are $1.29, while the Pop Tarts brand is $1.89 on sale. A lot of generic food doesn’t taste all that different from the name brands. I suspect many people don’t like buying generic stuff because it makes them feel poor. (That is certainly true in my case.)

Considering what I bought it might come as a surprise that I actually had spaghetti for dinner. Heh. It was quite good.

It is now the 15th of the month which means my $100 Food Budget Challenge is about halfway over. The good news is that I’m not starving. The bad news is that I’m out of mandarin oranges. I think I might go to the store tomorrow and get a case.

I haven’t eaten at a restaurant once this month. I think when December ends I’ll have to reward myself with a cheeseburger and fried cheese curds from Culver’s. Mmmm… fried cheese.

I didn’t buy any food today.

$100 Food Budget – Day 14

I decided to stop at the store after work tonight, because I knew after yesterday’s experience I’d be craving chocolate again. I only had ten dollars with me, and that forced me to add up each item as they were added to my cart. It was actually fairly stimulating in a mental sense. It certainly required more brainpower than my normal method of just throwing whatever I want into the basket. Stopping to think about each item and whether to buy it while weighing the pros and cons of choosing other items is quite an experience.

Ironically, despite making careful selections, I chose some pretty junky stuff.

I bought:

  • Generic Swiss Rolls
  • Generic Nutty Bars
  • Lay’s Stax
  • Sandwich meat
  • Cheese
  • A 12-pack of Dr Thunder

This experiment would be a lot easier if I didn’t feel so inclined to keep buying soda. Even at $2.58 for a 12-pack it still eats up a fair amount of money when you only have $100 to start with. I probably won’t be able to afford it anymore by the time I reach the end of the month. Thankfully I’m also quite fond of water and drink a large quantity of it.

So I found myself craving chocolate a while ago. I think chocolate is one of those substances you crave more when you know you don’t have any. Well, it turns out I did have some after all. I found a bag of chocolate chips in my pantry! Chocolate isn’t just for the ladies, folks. I know the Dove chocolate wrappers are sexist and biased toward women, but men usually like chocolate too.

Did you know that chocolate releases endorphins in the brain and gives people a sense of well-being? It also stimulates a chemical reaction in the brain which mimics the feeling of being in love. No wonder people love chocolate.

I didn’t spend any money today.

$100 Food Budget – Day 12

So I ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich earlier. Actually, I used fruit preserves, but a “peanut butter and preserves”  sandwich sounds awkward. Have you ever wondered what the difference is between jelly, jam and preserves? According to How Stuff Works, jelly is made from fruit juice, jam is made with fruit pulp or crushed fruit, and preserves are made with fruit chunks in a syrup. I like to buy Smucker’s Simply Fruit Preserves, because frankly it seems silly to me to add sugar to something already so sweet. (And that’s coming from a guy who loves sugar!)

I didn’t buy any food today.
