$100 Food Budget – Day 21

foodbudgetchallenge

So what happens if you’re on a $100 food budget for a month and you find yourself wanting something to snack on? Well one option is looking in the cupboard and finding some old chips. Actually, the Sun Chips weren’t that bad considering how old they were. I don’t remember when I bought them exactly, but I’m pretty sure it was sometime in 2009.

I also have some expired packets of hot cocoa mix which taste perfectly fine. But don’t worry, I’m not going to drink any expired milk. :P

I didn’t buy any food today.

Total Spent:  $81.01

Remaining Cash: $18.99

I’ve Been Counted!

So a few days ago, I walked out of my apartment and saw that someone had delivered a census form. I was pretty excited about it because I had never filled out a census form before. The last time this country had a census taken, I was 16 years old and living with my parents. It may sound silly, but it almost felt like a personal milestone.

I had heard horrible things about the census forms. I was expecting it to ask me all sorts of nosy questions, but instead it only asked 10 simple questions. I was a bit surprised to see “Negro” as an option for race, however.

Being intrigued by what I saw, I decided to look the issue up online. Apparently the census bureau opted to include “Negro” as an option because 56,000 people wrote it in on the 2000 census forms. Huh, I guess it’s not offensive to some people.

Anyway, I filled out my census form and dutifully mailed it in the next day. For that reason I was a bit surprised to see another census form in my mail today. Apparently there was one hand delivered last week and that was supposed to be just in case I didn’t get one in the mail. But I don’t think I’ll fill out the census form twice. That would probably only mess things up.

By the way, I also received a coupon for a free bag of Sun Chips.

They sent me the coupon because I became a fan of Sun Chips on Facebook.  That’s pretty nifty. If any of you other corporations would like to bribe me into becoming a fan on Facebook, feel free to do so.

World’s First Compostable Chip Bag

When I was a kid my mom always had a compost heap out back. It seemed odd the way she’d gather all her fruit and vegetable remnants in a big bowl and then take it out to the backyard and dump it on the big heap of disgusting natural garbage. One thing I can say for certain is that I never saw a chip bag in her compost, but that could change today.

Frito-Lay is now packaging their Sun Chips in 100% compostable bags. The bags are somehow made of vegetables, although you’d probably never guess it if you held the bag in your hands. The packaging feels much thinner and it’s much LOUDER when you handle it. The bag rustles a lot, which could end up causing trouble for kids trying to sneak chips before dinner. Heh heh.

I think this is a pretty cool idea. If they can reduce the amount of garbage in our landfills, I’m all for it. Hopefully Frito-Lay will roll out this compostable packaging for all their chip brands. And it would be great if the other snack manufacturers followed suit.

By the way, in case you were wondering, the new packaging does not affect the flavor of the chips.
